This is almost always one of the most difficult things to discuss when riders are just staring out. Riding is dangerous. The MSF course will harp on this fact.
Here are the statistics
- Motorcycle riders are 28 times more likely to die and four times more likely to get injured in an accident.
- 83,000 motorcyclists were injured in 2021 during accidents.
- More than a third of motorcyclists involved in accidents were unlicensed.
- A total of 5,932 were killed in fatal traffic accidents.3 The highest number of motorcycle accident deaths since the Fatality Analysis Reporting System was first started in 1975.
All statistics come from the NHTSA: motorcycle safety
None of these statistics are things beginner riders want to hear but it is the scary truth underlying the freedom that riding gives you.
We can prevent this as new riders. Take classes, Minimize your risk, be aware of what is going on around you, plan ahead, Always have an escape path in your mind should something happen.
While many accidents are caused due to drivers not paying attention the number one case of motorcycle accidents are singular vehicle.
As new riders make good choices and build strong foundations. Don’t let your confidence outweigh your skill.
Ride safe.
